The Texas Affinity with Horses

People everywhere like horses, and no more so than in the Lone Star State, which boasts an equine population of nearly one million – the most horses in any State.
Texas has a long-standing affinity with horses that originated while the area was under siege from Spanish Conquistadors – centuries before it became a republic in the mid-1800s and subsequently joined the Union.
The first Spanish horses on record in the region were introduced in 1542. In fact, Native Americans in the area had no horses until the arrival of the Spanish warriors.
Not to be outdone, settlers quickly discovered there was a plentiful, free supply of wild mustangs in Texas – if you could catch them!
Texas Rangers rode mustangs while scouring the State for banditos and other outlaws, and many men rode this type of horse in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 – one of the most important and decisive clashes in the history of America.
Today, the American quarter horse has the honor of being the official State Horse of Texas.
